Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is expected to be declared the newest U.S. national park.

Located on the east bank of the Ocmulgee River in Macon, Georgia, the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is a National Historical Park that features earthwork mounds constructed around 900 CE. The park has over 2,000 artifacts showcasing the culture of the Mississippians.

Some consider the Ocmulgee Mounds to be a “2,000-acre time capsule”. It is home to many unexcavated mounds, dozens of which are dotted across the landscape.

It is considered one of the country’s most significant archaeological sites. The Park Service has begun a particular resource study to determine if the Ocmulgee River Corridor should qualify for national park status.

The unique resource study will be completed in March. The NPS will use scientific research, public input, and other criteria to make a recommendation to Congress. The study is expected to last up to three years.

If the park is approved, it would be the first national park in Georgia. It could protect about 50,000 to 80,000 acres of land. The National Park Service has opened a public comment period on the proposal.
